Spending Christmas in a place where nature thrives offers a unique kind of joy. Just outside Mareeba, on Marg and Kevin's rural property, the natural world unfolds in vibrant detail. Marg, my sister, also is truely passionate about wildlife, and her knowledge made this holiday unforgettable. From the backyard creek to the neighboring block, every moment was filled with fascinating bird encounters and the peaceful beauty of the Australian bush.

Exploring the Backyard Creek and Surroundings
The property’s backyard creek is a small but lively ecosystem. It attracts a variety of birds, each adding color and sound to the landscape. Walking along the creek, I spotted a Pheasant Coucal moving quietly through the undergrowth. This bird’s striking appearance and unusual call made it a highlight of the day.
Nearby, the Red-backed Fairy Wrens flitted energetically among the shrubs. Their bright red backs stood out against the green foliage, a vivid splash of color in the natural setting. These tiny birds are a joy to watch, especially as they dart and chirp in groups.
Marg’s deep understanding of the local fauna helped me identify new species. Two that stood out were the White-throated Honeyeater and the Bronze Little Bronze-Cuckoo Both are common in the area but had been new to my birdwatching list. Their distinctive calls and feeding habits added layers of interest to the experience.
The Forest Kingfisher: A Personal Favourite
Among all the birds seen, the Forest Kingfisher captured my attention the most. This bird is common in the region, yet it felt special to see it up close. Its bright blue and white feathers gleamed in the sunlight, and its sharp eyes scanned the surroundings with purpose.
The Forest Kingfisher’s presence seemed to symbolize the essence of this rural property: a place where nature is both abundant and accessible. Watching it reminded me how rewarding it is to slow down and observe the small wonders around us.

Discovering New Species and Moments
Each day brought new surprises. The variety of birds was impressive, from the subtle to the spectacular. The Pheasant Coucal’s stealthy walk through the backyard was a contrast to the lively chatter of the honeyeaters. These moments highlighted the diversity of life thriving in this rural setting.
Marg’s expertise made the experience richer. She shared stories about the habits and habitats of the birds, explaining how the local environment supports such a wide range of species. This knowledge deepened my appreciation for the property and the care taken to preserve its natural state.
The Joy of Nature at Marg and Kevin’s Property
Spending time at Marg and Kevin’s place was more than a holiday; it was a chance to reconnect with nature. The birds, the creek, and the surrounding bush created a peaceful backdrop for reflection and discovery.
This experience shows how rural properties can be havens for wildlife and people alike. With respect and curiosity, anyone can enjoy the beauty and complexity of the natural world right in their backyard.
